Issue 001 · Editor’s Letter

Welcome to Black Girl Biohacking.

If you're here, you already know the statistics. You've heard them before: Black women face higher rates of cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders, autoimmune conditions, and stress-related illness. The data is real. The disparities are documented. The systems aren't built for us.

But here's what the statistics don't tell you: data doesn't define destiny.

This publication exists because I got tired of wellness advice that wasn't built with us in mind. Tired of longevity science that ignored Black women's biology, culture, and lived realities. Tired of biohacking content that assumed we all have the same access, the same resources, the same starting point.

So I built something different.

Black Girl Biohacking is where science meets culture. Where peer-reviewed research becomes actionable protocols. Where we acknowledge systemic barriers while building individual agency. Where longevity isn't about luck—it's about design.

Every month, you'll find:

  • One deep-dive feature exploring a major longevity topic with research, cultural context, and practical protocols
  • Six departments covering everything from nutrition to symptom tracking to daily rituals
  • Evidence-based content that doesn’t talk down to you or ignore the complexities of being a Black woman in America

This isn't wellness theater. This is biological literacy. This is intentional living. This is the long game.

Welcome to Issue 001. Let’s start with the most important question: If data doesn’t define your destiny, what does?

ABOUT & CONTACT

Where Longevity Meets Intentionality

Science-Backed Longevity for Black Women

Black Girl Biohacking is a science-backed, culturally grounded longevity publication built for Black women seeking intentional living, deeper self-knowledge, and long-term vitality.

We translate peer-reviewed research into actionable protocols, center Black women's biological and cultural realities, and build a community where longevity is designed—not discovered.

Here, data becomes agency. Wellness becomes intentional. And Black women reclaim control over their health narratives.

Shonda Patterson

Founder & Editor-in-Chief

I started Black Girl Biohacking because I was tired of wellness narratives that erased us—or pathologized us. Tired of reading longevity research that studied "women" but really meant white women. Tired of generic health advice that ignored the systemic barriers Black women face every single day.

So I built this: a space where science meets culture. Where data becomes agency. Where Black women design longevity on our own terms, with protocols that actually fit our lives.

Every month, we dive deep into one topic—research-backed, actionable, and rooted in reality. Because you deserve wellness systems built with you in mind.

What We Stand For

Biological Literacy

Understanding your biology gives you power. We translate complex research into knowledge you can use.

Cultural Grounding

Wellness advice that ignores Black women's lived realities isn't wellness—it's exclusion. We center both science and culture.

Intentional Living

Every choice is a vote for the life you want at 70, 80, 90. We help you design that future with intention.

Community as Protocol

Your grandmother knew: health isn't just individual optimization—it's rooted in connection, culture, and care.

Long Game Thinking

We don't do quick fixes or 30-day transformations. We're playing the long game—because your future self is counting on it.

Data as Agency

When you understand the "why" behind your biology, you gain the power to make informed decisions about your health.

Collaboration Opportunities

We're building a longevity ecosystem that centers Black women's voices, experiences, and expertise. Here's how we can work together.
