Every Day Is a Good Day to Reset
The body resets in ordinary ways—through rest, hydration, sleep and space. A personal reflection on January, capacity and making room for what comes next.
The body finds moments of reset all year long.
Dear Beautiful Black Girl,
The body finds moments of reset all year long. During sleep. After water. In the quiet that follows a long day. In the moment your breathing changes because something finally feels settled. In choices so ordinary they rarely earn a name.
Still, January carries a particular rhythm for me.
I treat it as ritual: a natural place to listen more closely to what has accumulated, what still fits, and what I want to make room for next.
While the beginning of a year can make everything feel urgent, I prefer to get quieter.
I pay attention to my energy. My appetite. My sleep. My thoughts. The pace I've been keeping. The things that feel heavier than they did a few months ago.
Reset, for me, begins there.
With noticing.
Making room
There are seasons when I naturally simplify.
I become more intentional about what I eat and when I eat it. I drink more water. I create longer stretches of rest. I move at a pace that gives me enough quiet to hear myself clearly.
Oftentimes fasting is part of that personal practice. I hold it as one choice within a larger rhythm of attention. The space it creates matters to me, while research on fasting and human health continues to evolve and the practice can affect people differently.
What matters most to me in January is the space the ritual creates.
When the pace softens, I notice more.
When the pace softens, I notice more. I can see which decisions came from momentum, how I have been showing up in my relationships, and which aspirations belong to another season.
The recognition usually arrives quietly: I think I'm ready to do this differently.
That is a body whisper too.
Capacity before direction
I used to think clarity had to come first.
Now I pay more attention to capacity.
There is a difference between asking myself what I want and asking that question when I actually have enough room to hear the answer.
Rest can create that room.
So can a walk. An open afternoon. A conversation that settles something. A boundary that frees up energy I had forgotten I was spending.
A reset can be that small.
Life offers them constantly.
The beginning of a morning. The end of a difficult week. The moment after changing your mind. The first full breath after realizing something you have been trying to ignore.
January simply gives me a reason to notice the practice on purpose.
The quiet return
I enter a new year seeking room.
Room for my thoughts to stop competing for attention. Room for my body to settle into a pace I can actually feel. Room for curiosity about what comes next.
That is what reset means to me now.
A return to enough space that I can recognize myself clearly.
And once I can hear myself again, direction usually becomes easier to find.
Every day is a good day to reset.
January is simply the month that reminds me to listen for the opening.
